Something that may be a surprise to many foreigners to London is that London is a very safe city in comparison to so many major cities around the world. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security, it is still a large city and therefore it is important to always have your wits about you no matter where you go or who you meet.
Here are a few things that if followed should increase your safety levels while in London.
Don’t look and act like a Tourist: There is nothing wrong tourists. But tourists standout like beacons on a hill. So keep in mind that tourists are particularly attractive to thieves particularly the pickpocket kind. Keeping that in mind while on the streets of London is very important. This means not opening a map on a street corner, not giving your camera to a stranger to take a photo of yourself and other things that will draw attention to yourself including gordy tourist type clothing. Just look like normal Londoners.
Walk, Don’t walk Signs: Watch the walk and don’t walk signs and take them as fact. So many people don’t pay attention to them and end up regretting it. London is a busy city with far too much traffic for the roads. This often means that it seems that cars would rather hit you than be late. Also remember that because they drive on the left side of the road. So, if your coming from North America or Asia, they will be coming at you from the opposite direction. Therefore, be very careful about the crazy traffic on London streets.
Be careful at ATM machines: In recent times there has been a scam going a round where ATM’s have had a false face placed on the front of the machine that scans your card as you insert it into the slot. The thieves then read your card and your pin number and then us it to buy stuff on your account. So, check the machine out thoroughly before you use it. Also, if you are on your own just be aware of people around you and make sure you put your card away safely. If you are traveling with another person it is a good idea to have them shield you when you type in your pin number. There have been all types of scams in recent times, so it best to keep your head up and mind alert when using the ATM.
Oxford Street and Pickpockets: Oxford Street is one of the most popular shopping stripes in the world. Unfortunately it is also one of the favourite haunt for pickpockets. It is certainly not the only area of London where there are pickpockets but it is one of the most prevalent. Take note at all times where your bag is on your body. If you have to have a bag on your back make sure every zipper is zipped (locked if possible) and that there isn’t anything of any huge importance in the outside pockets. Also, don’t carry a wallet of purse in an outside coat or trouser pocket, its too easy for the pickpockets.
Black Cabs and Mini Cabs: In London there are two kinds of cabs. The most notable are the famous London black cabs and the others are minicabs. Mini cabs are unlicensed taxis that work through an agency. The primary attraction of a minicab is that they can be much cheaper. However, they are not licensed, unlike black cabs, and are not required to pass ‘the knowledge’ test which proves they know their way around the city. You therefore can’t rely on them to know where to take. Black cabs run on a meter but there should be a clearly visible fare structure in the cab. If you do take a minicab, make sure you get a fixed price to your destination before you get into the cab. Minicabs are not allowed to solicit business. So, you have to actively call them or go to their office to order the cab. Black cabs, of course, can roam the city streets looking for business. Often in the early hours rouge minicabs will go out looking for business particularly form unassuming foreign tourists. Do not get in one of these cabs regardless of how good a deal it sounds or how desperate you are.
